The guy who discovered the golden was Ah Hin from Penang. It was a mutation from the brown discus. The original golden had all the markings of a brown discus, only difference is that, instead of brown,it had a pinkish tone to the body. The golden had two problems.First,it is recessive, genetically and secondly,it is known to be weak and sometimes die without any reason.Because of the second reason, breeders in the early days cross the goldens to pidgeons to try to strengthen it,clear the striations and also to improve the body shape.Little did they know that it will cost the golden a lot of problems in the future.Today,it is almost impossible to find a pure golden. With the value of the pidgeon dropping to nearly zero and overnight becoming the pariah of discus strains,it puts the golden into an unappreciated controversy.Look at the GLSS.It came,it went. Why? Because many hobbyists find pidgeon in their spawn. To find out whether you have a pure golden, just outcross it and if you see yellow fries, you know it is not pure.
Amazing background story, thanks for sharing - I really appreciate it!
